Folder Participation at the 3rd Meeting of the OECD Water Governance Initiative, Madrid 28-29 April 2014

PAWA project took part in this meeting through Arno River Basin Authority' Secretary General  in the framework of PAWA dissemination activities.

The PAWA leaflet was widely distributed to the general Water Governance Initiative Assembly (more than 100 World delegates). MrsGaia Checcucci also presented the project during the working group session on Basin Governance where water accounts were discussed as a tool for good water governance.

The OECD Water Governance Initiative is an international multi-stakeholder network of around 100 delegates from public, private and not-for-profit sectors gathering twice a year in a Policy Forum to share on-going reforms, projects, lessons and good practices in support of better governance in the water sector. It was launched on 27-28 March 2013 in Paris and held its 2nd Meeting on 7-8 November 2013 (OECD Headquarters, Paris).

The OECD Water Governance Initiative aims to:

 Advise governments in taking the needed steps for effective water governance reforms through policy dialogue across decision-makers at different levels;

 Provide a technical platform to discuss analytical work on water governance through peer-to-peer exchanges and knowledge sharing;

 Provide a consultation mechanism to raise the profile of governance issues in the Global Water Agenda and Post-2015 Development Agenda ;

 Support the implementation of the governance targets designed for the 6th World Water Forum (Marseille, 2012) up to the 7th World Water Forum (Korea, 2015);

 Contribute to the design of OECD Principles on Water Governance and OECD Indicators on Water Governance to engage decision-makers at all levels, within and outside the water sector, commit to action;

Objectives

Building on the key highlights from the 2nd meeting of 7-8 November 2013, the 3rd meeting will:

1. Discuss recent developments in the Global Water Agenda, especially the outcomes of the UN Meeting on Sustainable Development Goals (18-19 February, New York) and the 7th World Water Forum Consultation Meeting (27-28 February, Gyeongju, Korea) and next steps;

2. Discuss the scope, rationale and building blocks of OECD Principles on Water Governance, based on the scoping paper prepared by the Secretariat and key messages from the working groups ;

3. Discuss policy messages from Thematic Working Groups on stakeholder engagement; performance and governance of water services; basin governance; and integrity and transparency to be reflected in OECD Principles on Water Governance;

4. Discuss ways forward to build Water Governance Indicators to support the effectiveness and performance institutions and governance arrangements at macro, sectoral; institutional and project level;

5. Draw lessons from regional initiatives in support of better water governance, in particular in Latin America, Middle East and North Africa, and Africa.

6. Share experience on current and forthcoming water governance reforms, events and projects;
