The 1st International Congress on Energy & Environment (ICEE)

Welcome to the website of the 1st International Congress on Energy & Environment: bringing together Economics and Engineering, organized by FEP (School of Economics and Management, University of Porto), CEF.UP ( Centro de Economia e Finanças, University of Porto) and the CGIT ( Centro de Gestão Industrial e de Tecnologia) of the School of Engineering, University of Minho.

The conference aims to bring together leading academic scientists, researchers and scholars from the energy and environment science community to interchange knowledge, to discuss and to disseminate new ideas towards a low-carbon, sustainable future.

Although the euro-area economic crisis dominates the world attention and concerns while challenging our economic and social paradigm, the most serious challenge is much more vast. How to meet the energy demand of a population expected to be 9 billion in 2050 and increasing living standards around the world? How to plan and implement the transition from a fossil-fuel economy to a low carbon society based on clean energy and transport systems while knowing that its costs will affect the economic growth?

Both energy and environment transition issues are much more than pure technology processes. Instead, they involve processes of technological transfer where economic, social, and even politics play decisive roles. Therefore, the challenge ahead is huge!
