Event 2nd UfM Ministerial Conference on Environment and Climate Action

Cairo, 4 October 2021. Ministers from the 42 Member countries of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) will gather in Cairo for the 2nd UfM Ministerial Conference on Environment and Climate Action.

The Ministerial Conference will be chaired by European Commission, the Ministry of Environment of Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, in the presence of the UfM Secretary General, Nasser Kamel. It will be hosted by the Arab Republic of Egypt.

This second Ministerial Conference represents an important opportunity to the partner in the Union for the Mediterranean to reiterate the urgency of addressing shared climate and environmental challenges and steer the action towards a clean, competitive, resilient and inclusive Mediterranean for the health and well-being of all citizens in the region.

The 1st Ministerial Declaration on Environment and climate change adopted in 2014.

On this occasion, two side events will take place:

  • “Investing in the green Transition: A Mediterranean Outlook” will take place on 4 October 2021 at 14h30 in a hybrid format.

This high-level meeting, co-organised with the European Commission, will target a broad spectrum of policy makers in UfM member countries, business and financial sector in Egypt. As we recover from the COVID-19 crisis, we will seek to build back better and greener. This is even more urgent for the Mediterranean, one of the hardest hit regions in the world by the impact of climate change. All Mediterranean countries have clear common interests in taking action now. They also have a considerable potential to mitigate the drivers of climate change, including through an accelerated transition to low emission economies. Climate finance and sustainable investments will be essential to help recover better and create a more inclusive society, so that everyone can play their part. The event will look into trends, opportunities and tools to make the green transition in the Mediterranean possible.
