Launch of the European Green Capital Award

The Commission is launching a new initiative: the European Green Capital Award. Commissioner Dimas will inaugurate the European Green Capital Award on Thursday 22 May at 18:00 at the Committee of the Regions.

It all started on 15 May 2006, when 15 European cities and the Association of Estonian cities met in Tallinn to discuss the establishment of a European Green Capital award scheme. A joint Memorandum was signed at the time and currently, more than 40 European cities, including 21 EU capital cities, have expressed their support. The joint Memorandum was presented to President Barroso, Commissioner Dimas and Commissioner Hübner.

DG Environment has taken the lead and the concept is now becoming reality.
