News Programme for Prevention, Preparedness and Response to Natural and Man-made Disasters (PPRD South) newsletter highlights project’s activities and events

The EU-funded Programme for Prevention, Preparedness and Response to Natural and Man-made Disasters (PPRD South) has published the third issue of its newsletter where it highlights past and future activities and events.
The ten-page publication, available in English, French and Arabic, leads with an article on the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to be set up by the project as a new tool to assess the exposure of the Mediterranean region to disasters, and the training seminar to be held on the theme between 9 and 12 March in Rome. It also includes an item on the achievements of the simulation exercise on crisis management held in Turkey last December.
The newsletter also highlights the important role of women in the Algerian Civil Protection as well as other aspects related to natural disasters in the Mediterranean region. It also includes a programme “Identity Card” and list of contacts.
The objective of the €5 million PPRD South programme is to develop and reinforce the prevention, preparedness and response capacities of civil protection services in the Euro-Mediterranean region through increased institutional cooperation between the EU and the Mediterranean partner countries.
The project describes dealing with disaster risk reduction at international level as, “a must considering the frequent transnational impact of disasters as recently demonstrated by the torrential rains and floods which simultaneously struck Israel, Jordan, Palestine and Egypt in mid January.”
