Cyprus: Solea Dam inaugurated by the President
On Sunday 31st of October 2010, the ceremony of the attestation of the foundation at Solea Dam was carried out by the President of Cyprus, Mr. Demetris Christofias.
The main purpose of the project is the utilization of the flow of the Kariotis river, which is in Troodos mountains and outflows northwards to the Morfu gulf with the storage of an average of 4,5 MCM of water in the reservoir of the Solea Dam in Troodos and its transfer by gravitation or by pumps to five Irrigation Areas providing in this way efficient quantities of water for irrigation purposes of eight thousand decares.
The client of the project is the Water Development Department and the contractor is NEMESIS Construction Co Consortium LTD. The project has a budget of €18.000.000 and is expected to be completed by January 2012.
This dam is the 19th large dam operated on the island bringing the total available dam capacity to 156,412 MCM.
