News Qatar to tender next independent water and power project in 2011

Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) plans to launch the tender for developers to build an independent water and power project (IWPP) known as Facility D in 2011.

Facility D will be a gas-fired plant with a capacity of 2,000MW of power and 60 million gallons a day (g/d) of water.

According to Kahramaa’s electricity demand forecasts, Qatar will have sufficient power with its existing power generation plants until at least 2015.

The only project to be launched before then will be a 170MW project, which will be launched by 2014-15, for which Kahramaa approached developers in early 2010.

A source at Kahramaa has said that tendering for the Facility D project is set to start in 2011 so that the project is operational by 2015.

Other projects are expected to follow including a 240MW project at Rawdet, which would come online in 2018.

Qatar has already tendered three large IWPPs and one independent power project (IPP) with a combined capacity of 6,505MW and 163 million g/d. The projects are located at Ras Laffan and Mesaieed.
