News Algeria: €1.2 million from the EU to fight against floods

The European Union is supporting Algeria in its defence against natural disasters, funding a study that will define a national strategy to fight against floods in Algeria. Work on the study will start at the end of this month and the results are expected to be released mid-2015.

During the past 12 years, Algeria has seen devastating floods that have mainly affected big cities and urban centres, resulting in loss of human life and considerable material damage.

The EU-funded study will enable:

- An audit of the existing data related to floods on all the Algerian territory.
- To identify the causes of the floods.
- To suggest a coherent and efficient set of measures to prevent from and fight against floods.
- To train staff to master the specific calculating and mapping tools that will help define the flood-prone areas and the flood risks depending on the stakes.
