Environmental Law and Policy Master in Laws @Stanford Law School

Stanford Law School’s new Environmental Law & Policy LLM (Master of Laws) Program: This highly specialized one-year program provides lawyers with a law degree from outside the United States and relevant work experience with the opportunity to study environmental law and policy at Stanford University. Let us highlight some of the definitional characteristics of our program:

• The small size of our LLM program guarantees personalized training; for the 2014-2015 academic year, we expect to admit only about a dozen students.

• At the Law School, the Environmental Law and Policy LLMs will be taught by faculty who are at the forefront of research in environmental and energy law. The curriculum continues to enlarge every year and offers each student the opportunity to choose among a variety of exciting and informative courses relevant to the solution of environmental challenges at the local, national, and global level, such as Environmental Law and Policy, Energy Law, Water Law and Policy, International Environmental Law, or Land Use.

• The teaching fellow for the Program personally advises the students and leads our Environmental Law Colloquium where the students examine the theoretical frameworks underlying environmental regulations and engage in policy discussions on present-day global problems and challenges. As part of the colloquium, students write and present a research paper focused on the solution of a pressing environmental or energy issue, preferably in the student’s home region.

• Students also have the opportunity to take classes throughout the university, such as, clean tech or electric cars, in Stanford’s Business and Engineering Schools. We also encourage students to attend lectures and seminars on environmental and energy topics that are held across the campus with leaders from different fields of practice, including talks at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and the Precourt Institute on Energy.

The application period for the 2014-2015 academic year is now open. We would like to encourage students interested in building their transnational expertise and become part of an international community of environmental attorneys and scholars to apply to our program.  I would very much appreciate it if you could help me spread the news about our new Program and to encourage students who ask you for advice on foreign LLM programs to apply to our program.
