News Water Information Systems at the 5th World Water Forum

With the International Office for Water (IOWater), the French National Agency for Water and Aquatic Environments, EMWIS , African-Wis, the European Environment Agency , l’ANA (Brazil), the World Water Council, and AISH a session on water information systems has been organised the last 18 March with with the French Water Partnership (FWP) on the French Pavilion of the 5th World Water Forum in Istanbul (Turkey).

A number of recommedations have been adopted at the end of this session titled: "Tools to support knowledge and management of water resources, aquatic environments and their uses".

Among others, participants underscored the need to develop national and local capacities and tools for data collection, analysis and dissemination to better inform policy making and to empower user communities and citizens, as well as take profit from new technological developments in data collection techniques (including remote sensing) and knowledge management tools.

However, some questions remained and need to be sorted out, such as: the need to distinguish data, indicators and knowledge, the question about how to ensure adequate funding for long-term sustainable monitoring networks,  especially in developing countries, and the need of regulatory and enforcement rules or the possibility to develop incentives for voluntary use of shared information systems, and finally the question on how to ensure optimal coordination between the various information systems at the global level.
