Project Autonomous desalination system concepts for sea water and brackish water in rural areas with renewable energies – Potentials, Technologies, Field Experience, Socio-technical and Socio-economic impacts

- Identification and quantification of regions, where fresh water supply from sea or brackish water with decentralised autonomous desalination units are a possible solution for the water supply problem.

- Generating information on market-available desalination systems through study and development of technical concepts for installing sustainable desalination units in selected areas.

-  Planning, implementation and monitoring of pilot installations to achieve detailed knowledge on technical viability, socio-economic concerns.

- Gaining information about actors in the field of water and energy supply, possible investors and political framework in order to be able to identify potential and barriers to boost the implementation of decentralised desalination units.

- Preparation of tools, data bases, training and awareness raising materials for supporting the systems designers, installers, operators and final water users in the implementation and sustainable operation of decentralised desalination units.

Objectives - This proposal aims at investigating the concept of fresh water supply in rural areas, using salt water (sea water and brackish water). The project focuses on units powered by autonomous, renewable energy supply systems with fresh water output in the range of 100 l/day to 10 m3/day.

- The aim is not to develop new desalination technologies, but to adapt existing concepts from various suppliers for use with renewable energies. The project evaluates the potential and the optimum solution for areas and countries involved, taking into account the technical, economic, environmental, organisational, socio-technical and socio-economic aspects. This integrated, multidisciplinary and trans-border approach to problem-solving will contribute to the improvement of the sustainability of water management projects.
Results - The major result of this project will be the experiance with the implementation of a large variety of different small-scale  ADS powered by renewable energy. The ADS will be installed in five MENA countries: Cyprus, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, and Turkey.

- ADIRA will create knowledge in various fields to promote the implementation of ADS in the Mediterranean Basin. The following will be available for each location in the survey areas:

- Optimal combination of different types of desalination
technology and associated Renewable Energy Sources.

- Energy supply systems for the desalination unit, taking the current power supply of households into account, if appropriate.

- Economic operation schemes e.g. utility concept operated by the residents.

- Necessary actions for sustainable social integration and development of small communities.

- Actions for raising awareness of the new technologies
among the water consumers.

- Measures to ensure satisfactory operation and maintenance.

- Necessary measures for ADS construction: Small desalination unit design, selection, local participation in manufacturing, installation and staff training.

- Proposals to national and regional governments on how to support the rural water supply infrastructure.
